About the Hythe

Wrapped in the refuge of Vail’s alpine splendor, The Hythe cultivates Earl’s lifelong physical and mental kinship with the mountain that started it all.

Long before Vail Mountain had global renown or even a name, its vision burned bright in the head and heart of two dreamers and fellow skiers, Earl Eaton and Pete Seibert. Their journeys — serendipitously intertwined in the summer of 1962 — are paved with tales of passion, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in possibility.

They famously met in Aspen, Colorado, after having both served in WWII — Earl in the engineer Battalion and Pete in the 10th Mountain Division — and both propelled by a love of skiing and a quest for the perfect mountain. Despite their different skill sets and social personas, they were an unlikely but perfect pair who forged a deep friendship through their shared vision of what could be. Earl and Pete’s histories shaped them and, in turn, shaped Vail. Together they built a legacy that birthed the iconic ski village loved by millions.

The Hythe celebrates the passions of Earl and Pete, encouraging you to discover the unique stories and journeys that sparked a legacy.

Through Earl’s lifelong physical and mental kinship with the mountain that started it all, we cultivate a rarefied collection of mountain experiences of such grandeur yet authenticity, they inspire awe in the hearts of Vail visitors and locals alike. Through Pete’s love of camaraderie and European ski culture, we reimagine the revelry, camaraderie and hospitality indigenous to the Swiss après culture, infusing the “good-time-was-had-by-all” spirit into every experience you’ll have on property.

As Vail’s undisputed destination authority, The Hythe harnesses the individual and collective passions of Earl and Pete. The result? A haven filled with endless possibilities for guests and locals to discover shared passions of their very own — be it handcrafting their own skis like Earl’s father famously did, or bonding with friends and family over our weekly Chästeilet ritual, an ancient cheese-sharing ceremony marking the end of summer in the Swiss Alps.

Unlike anything in Vail Valley or beyond, The Hythe grants a longed-for opportunity to venture forth from the world of common day into a sophisticated haven rich with joy-filled celebration and the boundless rewards of shared good times.
